Dog License Information

For first-time licensing of a new puppy or newly acquired dog, the owner must register their new dog directly with St. Clair County Animal Control either online or in-person at the County Animal Control Office or the County Treasurer’s Office. All dogs over 4 months of age must be rabies vaccinated and licensed pursuant to State Law.

Do I have to get a license for my dog?

Yes. It is required by law in the state of Michigan. All dogs are required to be licensed before turning five (5) months of age. Newly purchased or acquired dogs 5 months of age or older should be licensed within thirty (30) days of ownership.

How do I know when my dog's rabies vaccine expires?

You can contact your veterinarian, check your last certificate or if previously licensed, contact the Treasurer’s Office or Animal Control Office.

How do I get a dog license?
  • Mail your renewal fee and rabies vaccination certificate to Animal Control.
  • If renewed by mail or online, your payment is your receipt and a tag will be sent within 4 weeks.
  • In-person at the Treasurer’s Office or Animal Control.
  • Online via the Animal Control page of the County website.
When does my dog license expire?
  • In 2019, all license expirations correspond with your dog’s rabies vaccine expiration date. If their vaccine expires on 6/30/19, then your dog license will also expire on 06/30/19.
  • If you purchase a one-year license in 2019, it will expire on month/date of rabies in 2020.
  • If you purchase a three-year license in 2019, it will expire on month/date of rabies in 2022.
What are the fees?
  • Standard fee schedule on web site.
  • There is a $25 late fee if the license is not renewed within 30 days after the expiration date.
  • There is a $3.95 fee per dog to renew licenses online.
How do I renew online?
  • If you do not have an existing account, you must obtain a quick access code from your license renewal notice sent via mail. You can call or email Animal Control to obtain your code.
  • If you have an existing account, click “log on” and use the email and password that you used to create your account.
  • You will need to upload a copy of your dog’s updated vaccination certificate
